My newest Clematis.

I couldn't resist!
I went to the annual Spring Garden show in Truro last week, and wasn't very impressed by the plants on sale....until I arrived at the Clematis stand.
I've been looking for a deep purple one for a while , and this is just perfect.

She is called, rather boringly, Multi Blue, and has the interesting little frilly centre.
As soon as she was planted there was a race amongst the slugs to get to her first. I do try to use non toxic methods of repelling the little beasts, but I did put a few granules out. I have found a method of keeping the slugs off by surrounding the plant with non toxic granules, that looks a bit like chopped gravel. The slugs won't crawl over this, apparently.

I'm hoping for great bursts of flower from my new acquisition.

  1. Love! Elsa Spath is blooming at my house and we are waiting for Henryi to flower. Clematis are one of my favorite because you can tuck them into nearly any corner of the garden and the blossoms are gorgeous.

  3. Multiblue is one of my preferred, it has a double layer of flowers when it starts and later in summer it flowers like on your picture. I have learned that Clematis should be watered and fertilized a lot now when they start and never suffer water or food during the season. Must say, they have well improved in flowers and flowering period when I did start following that advice last year.

  6. This clematis is the same one that graces our garden with her blooms :0) she will bloom for you every year dear Barbara and as long as you don't do much to her. Just let her be, she will acclimate herself to her new environment without much fuss.

Mine has been with us for over 8 years and the buds are already forming on the vine once again...

many blessings to you dear lady,

    mari

  7. Absolutely beautiful Barbara! I love clematis and have 2 dark purple plants near fences. Mine have been slow to grow, but they are starting to get some size finally. I just read somewhere that sprinkling pistachio shells around plants deters slugs because they are sharp. They might be a nice natural thing to try, and at the very least you get to eat some delicious pistachios :)

A beautiful clematis! I hope it will give you lots of flowers ...
I'm 'looking mine out of the soil' too :)

    Love, Carolien

  9. How pretty! Those slugs are bothersome. We don't have many here (we do have some snails) but when I lived in Washington State, they were HUGE and FAT. Ugh!
    Happy SPRING!

  11. I planted two clematis today, and one of them was Multi Blue! I love clematis! I hope I stay in this house long enough for them to "leap". (The first year they sleep, the second year they creep the third year they leap.)

  12. Your new clematis looks lovely. I hope it will grow and flourish for you. Spring is such a time of hope, isn't it? Yesterday we planted a honeysuckle against the fence along the drive. It's supposed to be a fragrant one - we have had honeysuckles which bloomed but had no scent at all. So I am hoping this one will like its new home. xoxo
