There has been great activity in our garden today.
Some time ago, my husband made a bird box when we stayed at the Blind Veteran Centre in Brighton. I did wonder if the birds would appreciate its unusual shape....but
today we have spent time watching these pretty little Bluetits flying in and out.
At the moment we are not quite sure if they are building a nest or already have babies and are feeding them. It seems a little early for that but we shall learn more over the next few days. We fixed the box in an old apple tree.
It is such a thrill to watch them, especially as during the three years we have been here the birds have studiously ignored any other older boxes already in the garden.
Obviously a New Build was more to their taste.
Under the apple tree on which the box is positioned, I have a small collection of favourites, particularly Cowslips, primroses, grape hyacinths and a little bit of London Pride. I remember that growing in my Grandma's garden.
These cushions of Aubrietia and white Arabis have done so well and are a great joy when I look out of my kitchen window.
Spring is really on her way now.

ReplyDeleteSo exciting! I love watching our garden birds, and am longing for them to build a nest in one of the trees. It must be a thrill for your husband to see them settling into his handmade bird box! Such pretty flowers too, I love this time of year. xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteYour birdhouse is so nice, how charming! I'm glad the birds have found it. I recognize the story of old houses: André placed three new ones last week, because the old ones were deserted. I can't wait till they have new owners ... We do already 'have' little sparrows in the firethorn in the front garden. They 'sing out' loudly and the parents are so busy! Spring is such a lovely time of the year.
I am so happy you can/do use my needlebook, so sweet!
Have a nice evening & love, Carolien
Even here in the frozen North we are starting to see lots of colour. So glorious. So good for the soul! Birds too x
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, I think that I would be spellbound if I saw such beautiful Bluetit birds visiting new where I lived. They are gorgeous...I don't think that I've actually every seen one myself!
ReplyDeleteHoping that some next building is ongoing. xo
I think you will find the most important elements in a birhouse are thesize of the entrance hole, how far off the ground the house is sited, and the location of the house. This website can help provide answers http://www.rspb.org.uk/

ReplyDeleteThe birds are just getting back from flying south for the winter so it's been delightful to hear all the sounds and sights of different birds. I love your bird house!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to have new residents in the lovely new bird house!! xx
ReplyDeleteLovely signs of Spring at your place. Love the coloring on that sweet bird. That's too funny that the birds prefer the new "house".
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bird! Isn't that funny that they choose certain houses? My neighbor placed a sunny yellow house on a limb and the birds moved in right away. She doesn't even feed the birds like I do. I'm glad they moved in though. I like seeing their pretty heads pop out of the hole.
ReplyDeleteYour cushions of flowers look great!
It's so lovely to be able to look out of a window while working and see such sights - flowers and birds galore. Glad that the birdhouse is no longer vacant.
ReplyDeleteOoooo... such glimpses of loveliness indeed. I loved the photos and especially the field of flowers in your blog header. What a pretty blue bird.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a beautiful day...
Brenda
What a lovely photograph of the bird! We love watching the birdies here at the cottage in France. It is so nice to hear all the different bird songs in the mornings. At the moment the cuckoo and Hoopoe are being rather loud, lol.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is looking lovely and what a joy to see the birds!
ReplyDeleteIt is exciting to watch birds breeding in a garden. Unfortunately, a pair of great tits has not come to the nest in our garden this year.
ReplyDeleteBirds enjoy all sorts of shape boxes :0) Your garden is looking so lovely Barbara :0) mari
ReplyDeleteThe little bird is just so sweet. We don't tits of any kind here, much less a pretty one such as your. Your spring flowers are very pretty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute bird. Lovely spring flowers.
ReplyDeleteOh how lovely, we never get anything nesting in our box probably due to our cat and three next door! Hope you get to see little ones learning to fly!
ReplyDeleteLove the arabis and aubretia, mine disappeared(the aubretia anyway)! I dug up the arabis ad it got too straggly! I too have London Pride and love it,it always reminds me of an elderly gentleman who gave me plants of it many years ago from his own garden. The nesting box I have too and told my husband that the hole in front surely is far too small for any bird but you are having success with yours ! I will have to live in hope!
ReplyDeleteYour garden is beautiful and what a lovely little bird! I have never seen one where we live. We enjoy watching the birds too, I just adore the little creatures!
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely! And I'm so glad that the birds have decided they like their new house. xoxox
ReplyDeleteCheck my post from today.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! Even birds are into new builds those days !!!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty little birds with their green and blue feathers. I hope the news is good and a new generation will be raised in that handsome New Build! It's very nice to see spring beginning to burgeon forth in all her color and variety.
ReplyDeleteI like to watch the birds too. Lovely spring flowers coming up in your garden and a beautiful header photo. :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend! ♥
We have the same, blue tits are going in and out of the boxes, I think they are checking it out, getting ready.
