A day at the seaside??

A day at the seaside......where?

In the city of Paris, of course!

From July 20th until August 20th, Paris will be transformed into a seaside resort.

2000 tons of sand will be brought in by boat. Trees will be planted. Beach huts will appear. Over a thousand deckchairs will be available for people to lounge in the sun, and sail boats will be provided. There will be outdoor games, Boules and Petanque, Table tennis and a climbing wall. Parasols will shade folk from the sun, should there actually be any.

Naturally there will be places to eat and drink..what would Paris be without that?

Paris Plages began in 2002 and was the creation of the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe. His idea was to make Paris an ideal summer place for those who could not afford to go away on holiday, and also to bring in tourists. Over the years it has become more and more popular, and this year is bigger and better than ever. Apparently it is now being copied by other European cities.......but Paris thought of it first!

An outdoor concert of classical music will signal the opening of this year's Paris Plages, followed by a massive picnic, with a 3 kilometre long tablecloth. One of France's biggest supermarket chains will provide picnic baskets containing plate, cup, cutlery and even a napkin.

Advertising has been stepped up amongst hotels and other providers of accommodation. Even though Paris is only 3 hours by train, we won't be joining the beach crowds!

What fun it must be to be part of it all! Only in Paris..........!

What fun but what a great expense it is for them to do that, honey! If you ever get to the U.S. I'll personally take you to the beach in California!

Lovely to hear from you Elisabeth.I hope you are enjoying yourself whatever you and your quilting friends are up to. Thank you so much for dropping by :)
Have you been converted to barkcloth!? Its a very interesting fabric and the French have some wonderful examples of it. I love the texture and the old prints.
Keep in touch

Only in Paris,indeed!.....although the West Edmonton Mall has long had a submarine ride and an indoor beach. Very weird, but lots of fun in the middle of a -40 January day!

Hmm, not sure about all that sand in a city centre. Think I prefer my sand with the smack of ozone on the beach. Quite novel though, and verything else sounds like grand fun, and I bet it will look splendid!

Hello Elizabeth,

I remember back when this idea was first launched, and saw some television coverage of what it was really like to be there.

I know that one pays admission to sprawl on some French Riviera beaches. Is there any charge for the Parisian version? Is there any dress code, or other other restrictions? I am always curious about what goes on to make those perfect photos.

I remember as a Devon teenager I laughed at the idea of creating beaches inland, as the French did. Now that I live in inland France I quite see why they do - we have had a wonderful time at some artificial beaches only a quick drive away from our home! The Paris one sounds really fantastic.

Hi Elizabeth,

I have been catching up on missed posts. I tell you what- I would be laying on the sand just enjoying everything. I love the idea of doing something like that.

Very hot here- 115 today. Way too warm to spend much time outdoors unless you are in water constantly.

How is hubby?

hugs to you both,
Barb

I haven't seen the Paris Plage yet, but I think it is a great idea. The magnificent beach, water features, and lake at South Bank in the middle of Brisbane is stunning, and always immaculately clean. Such an amazing facility in a city, and a joy to watch families enjoying themselves.
There was talk of doing one in Dublin along the River Liffey, but I think it would be a disaster and a mess, with the Changeable Summer weather we've been having here in Ireland for the past three years.

That's amazing!
Hope you and your husband are enjoying the summer.
